National Doughnut Day originated in 1938 when The Salvation Army in Chicago declared the first Friday in June as a day to raise funds during The Great Depression. The idea was inspired by the selfless efforts of the "Donut Lassies" — 250 Salvation Army officers who provided essential goods, hot coffee, and freshly-baked doughnuts to soldiers near the front lines during World War I.
