High Food Costs Stir The School Meal Industry

 

The cost of living and global inflation is showing their true colors everywhere. The latest hit is seen on school meals for young kids and children. As the mismatch between funding and surging food costs is created there is trouble for the food planners.

 

Quality Cut

Food teams have resorted to processed foods and inferior meat to produce kitchen snacks for school cafes.
“This is putting the health of our schoolchildren in jeopardy,” said Kevin Courtney from the National Education Union.
The trouble is that at one end the food standards are set but with no relief for the prices it is getting difficult to provide the same food at the given prices.
Kitchens are contemplating serving cold food as the oven leads to another price hike in the complete package.

To aggravate things further, many students that were eligible to eat free food have now been told to buy it as their parents’ income bracket falls in a certain category. A point to be noted is that while their bracket may be different but the salary is not enough to deal with kids’ lunch boxes on a daily basis.
Instead of providing relief to the people such measures are a step towards the bad health of kids and future generation.
