Karachi, Pakistan’s largest city, is facing a severe flour crisis due to an ongoing dispute between the flour mills association and the Sindh food department. According to a recent report by a news channel, 70% of the city’s flour mills have run out of wheat, and the remaining 30% have only 3,000 to 4,000 bags available, which is not enough to meet the demand. As a result, if no wheat is made available by Tuesday, all the flour mills in the city will be shut down until new shipments arrive.

Sindh Food Department’s Response
The head of the Sindh Food Department has acknowledged the wheat shortage, which has caused a flour crisis in Karachi.
The Sindh government aimed to purchase 1.4 million tons of wheat but has failed to meet the target since March, resulting in the shortage. In contrast, the Punjab government has already completed the purchase of 40% of the wheat.
Price Hike and Limited Supply
The food department has warned that the price of flour in Karachi could reach up to Rs200 per kg due to the shortage. Currently, only 10% of the city's flour supply can be maintained, and all flour mills are closed due to the unavailability of wheat to the millers.
Conclusion
The flour crisis in Karachi has intensified due to the ongoing dispute between the flour mills association and the Sindh food department. The shortage of wheat has resulted in a scarcity of flour, with only 10% of the city's flour supply being available at present. The situation may worsen if the government does not take appropriate measures to address the crisis.
